This is Lisa's wonderful little quilt! I did some fun custom quilting on it....I wanted the quilting to be fitting for the batik fabric....and as always wonderful piecing Lisa!

I used an off white thread for all the cream fabric and a medium brown for the dark areas. For the batting, I used double warm and white. Perfect for a wall hanging or runner....it really make it lay nice and flat!

Six quilts in one day!

Quilted and bound these up in 1 day! You don't want to know what time I went to bed and when I woke up to finish though!

Finished 15 minutes before Karen came to pick them up! Fewww!!

Karen is so sweet, she brought pumpkin cupcakes for my family! YUMMY!

All overall designs from the front of the machine. Couple of swirls...couple of meanders. I prepared the backs...prepared the binding.

I just finished Lisa's quilt and love how it turned out! I knew I wanted to stick with the leaf theme through out! My leaf inspiration comes from Kim S. She's absolutely an amazing leaf quilter and I took one of her classes a few years back and bought her book Just Leaf It! Thanks for the inspiration Kim! I used bleached Hobbs 80/20 for the batting and a sewfine off white thread through out the whole quilt. The only stitch in the ditch I did was around the border and I did continuous line quilting in the flying geese....except for the leafy vine parts.

For the leaf vines, I made my spine first then stitched from the bottom of the vine and up...with one side then the other. (made my petals first then put the vein in)

Lisa's piecing was superb!! Oh so perfect and square!

This is Yolanda's Quilt. It was easy to do up...I just went back and forth with my quilting from one triangle the the next. I used a gray thread and Hobbs batting. Fun, Fun!

This is Sandara's quilt. Fun quilt with fun fabric. I did the pattern Gilded by Ann Bright on it and used a variegated Rainbow-white and black thread.

These two quilts are Sandy's. They were block of the month quilts and Sandy did two at the same time!! Way to go! Sandy quilted each block with different decorative stitches (that was part of the class...learning how to use your sewing machine stitches), with the batting all ready on the back....the borders and sashing's did not have batting, so I quilted it, like I would any quilt. I didn't have to do very much quilting in the blocks and I like how they puffed up after quilting around all the flowers.. I also tried really hard to keep my quilting simpler...to keep down the hours! I think I did pretty good! As you can see a lot of the borders do not have quilting inside....I did stitch in the ditch for all seams though, It bugs me to have seam pop up....although I like seams popping up sometimes! Okay...I'm rambling...

About 6 hours per quilt and one thread color through out. The piano key border was easy because I did a light squiggly line instead of using a ruler to make perfect straight lines....

and when stitching in the ditch I slowed my speed up a bit and did not use the ruler very much for that either...just tried to stay in the ditch freehand.

OK...I think that's it! Sandy will be here any minute to pick them up!

This quilt is Kathy's, I've know Kathy for a long time, she did this up a long time ago. She finally had it quilted...by me. The white fabric is like a denim...so it didn't give much, as far as move? I made it work though, Kathy loved it and that's all that matters!

These quilts belong to Marjorie. I used the pattern Gilded by Ann Bright for the top quilt. The next quilt....I did a freehand all over feather and the last quilt was light custom, some border designs and then outlined the picture blocks, then filled in the rest with a meander. All fun quilts!

And this is Betty's quilt! I love Betty, she is so nice and I've quilted up quite a few of her quilts. This was a big one and she wanted double batting. I did a freehand swirly thingy.

So sorry the pictures are not better, I took some of these pictures at night....so I did not get the natural light through the window.

These quilts are Melissa's my friend. The top two are poly quilts that I think her Grandma did up. They are...I think her moms and sisters. I did a basket weave pattern for the black and red quilt and straight lines for the blue and black. The blue and black is my favorite! Melissa did up the bottom quilt for her boy. So fun and awesome!! I did a swirl on it...I call it my "lasso swirl". If you look close you can see it looks like a lasso....fun and fast. I start the swirl from the inside and then go it...swirl into another swirl and on...and on...

This is Karen's quilt. I did a freehand feather design on it. I think it turned out great for this little quilt.

This is also Karen's. I've wanted to try this freehand large swirl design, so Karen's quilt was my trial. I like it. There are few start and stops though.

This is Ellen's quilt. She likes the quilting on the lighter side. I kept the quilting pretty simple. I didn't stitch in the ditch on this quilt and again...love continuous line. I used two threads, a medium brown and a cream. I used a curved ruler, for all the curved feather vines in the triangles. For the center feather design, I used an acrylic circle to make a symmetrical feather vine around the outside of the embroidery...circle in the center then filled in with the feathers. Her piecing was amazing. Perfectly square!!

This is Elna's sweet quilt. I used the pattern Deb's Dahlias on it.

This fun quilt is Yolanda's! I met Yolanda through Flikr. She wanted modern quilting on her quilt. Not a request I get very often. I used an ice blue thread on the blues and charcoal thread on the black. Warm and white batting....I had no problem with the white showing through the needle holes. Her back was pieced with lots of seams and since the batting is pretty thin the seams stood up some...but since the quilting is pretty heavy...it pushed the seams right down and I was very pleased with that. This quilt DID NOT take 4 1/2 hours to quilt up. :) !! It was great challenging myself to some modern quilting. Thanks for the chance to do that Yolanda!!

This quilt is Cinda's. It was a fun one to do up. She wanted custom quilting and thread to match. I used red thread on red, white on white and blue on blue. Very fun and patriotic and the piecing was beautiful!

This is Marilyn's quilt. I did custom quilting. Leaves in the border, continuous line and I didn't stitch in the ditch. I used warm and white. Very pretty quilt!

This is also Marilyn's. She wanted straight lines very this cute baby quilt!

Oh and I wanted to tell how I did the quilt in my last post. And why it took me only 4 1/2 hours. Each block was almost continuous. Once I put my needle into the fabric I tried really hard not to end my stitch. Continuous lines and loops. I quilt a bit faster than most people I think. And it helps my curves stay smooth. I did do some filler and some feather's that of course would not allow me to be totally continuous. And for the sashing's I stitched my vines...no marking or measuring just eyeballing it, then filled in with rabbit ear feathers which for me are definitely the fastest. And the only stitch in the ditch I did was around the 10 inch blocks.

I had the privilege when I first started longarm quilting watch other longarmers quilt and one quilter in particular cranked her speed up on a custom quilt...that was stitching in the ditch too. After I saw that I was challenged. I went home and did just that. I cranked my speed up. Of course depending on what your doing you can't always do that. But if you haven't tried it, do! You'll be surprised how much faster you can go. I don't have a stitch regulator so I have to adjust my speed all the time. Not sure how to work the regulated ones....do you just go faster, with out having to adjust anything?

This quilt is Fran's quilt. One of the sweetest ladies I have met in this business. I did custom quilting on this quilt. Lot's of continuous curve and loops. Stitched in the ditch around the blocks . It took me about 4 1/2 hours to quilt up. I used cream thread through out.

This is the quilt I ended up picking out because of bad tension. I changed my mind and did an overall feather, instead of a simple meander. I felt it deserved that after all it went through. :)

This is Lori's quilt. She's had it done for quite sometime. I'm sure she'll be happy to have it quilted finally.

This little runner is Angela's. It's actually fabric and not pieced. I did straight lines to mimic the piano key's on the borders.

This fun wall quilt is Betty's. So many little pieces...yikes! I did custom quilting on it. I used 3 threads: tan..gray..variegated blues. Stitched in the ditch and continuous line. The center was a bit puffy, but after it got quilted it flattened down great! It took me about 4 1/2 hrs to quilt up.

Finally...kids in school and back to quilting! I've had this quilt on the machine ready to be quilted for a week now. School started yesterday...so I was finally able to put some time into the quilt and finished it up today!

This is Lisa's quilt. She wanted custom quilting on it. I really enjoyed quilting this up! I did a lot of continuous curve...piano key for the border...stitched in the ditch in the major seams...I also wanted to accent the large Ohio Stars and this is where I did some pebbling to try to pull that star out since the quilt is pretty monochromatic. Lisa's piecing was wonderful and she provided me with wool batting to use. I love wool batting!! Also...I used Sew Fine thread through out the whole quilt. I went with a light medium tan tone so I didn't have to switch the thread. It took me about 10 hrs to do up..I think that's it. Oh and I used Magna glide prewound bobbins for the back of the quilt. I shoulda took a picture of the back? Maybe tomorrow. :)

Black Light

For anyone that has not seen a black light used before....this is what it is.

I removed my light bulb from my little bar light and put a black light in it's place. I purchased the black light at Lowe's. Then I ordered the black light pencil on-line. So when you use the black light pencil with the black light...light bulb your pencil will glow. It's great when marking any light or white quilt. And it's TOTALLY invisible in natural light or any other light besides a black light. And it does wash out with a damp rag.

On this quilt. The pencil did show in the red fabrics....but came out just fine with a damp rag.

This is Diane's cute little quilt I'm currently working on. I love this spineless feather! It's a good feather for fun and bright fabric! I've found the best way to do this feather is to draw out the spine for a reference line using a black light pencil....as shown above. :)

This is Jim's quilt he did up for a baby boy blanket. I did the pattern 11" Leaf Pile on it. Great pattern for this quilt!

For the 2nd quilt I used the pattern "Fantasia". For the 3rd quilt I used the pattern "Plumage" and for the last quilt I did a meander for the center part and a feather for the border. They are all very well pieced quilts and I think they turned out great!

This is Sandy's quilt....Crab Apple Hill Design. I used off white thread in the white embroidery blocks and black/white variegated thread on the black and pieced blocks. I like how it made it look like cob webs. This was a fun one to quilt up. Sandy did a GREAT job on her hand embroidery!!

These sweet pre-wounds are like candy to me! I was sweatin...I only have 3 left. NOT NOW!! So when I first bought these I never thought I would use white very much.. I use to really try hard to match my top and bottom threads and therefore was winding many...many...bobbins! But the more I started using these the more I loved them. The white is pretty thin and so it blends real nice on most backs....with most Medium to light tone threads on top.

They are magnetic on one side and therefore snug in to the bobbin case. You do need to take out the bobbin spring to use these.

I ordered them through Fil-Tec.

They do have other colors but it is there "glide" thread line. And it is thicker. I'm sticking to these for now. There is more thread on a bobbin and the only one's that come in a box, besides black.

Just though I'd share one of my "longarm" candies I can't live with out!!

Marcella did up these two quilts...I quilted for her a while ago. She entered them into our local quilt show in March and one ribbons on them! So yes I won 2 ribbons too! First ever. I haven't picked them up yet...but still quite exciting for me!

On the black quilt. Marcella added applique stars on the border and it looked amazing with the feather behind the stars!

Anyway...I got some of this new OMNI thread by Superior Threads at Quilt Market and LOVE IT!! I quilted this quilt with it and had no tension problems...it was smooth and just a little sheen...Beautiful!! Better yet, it's cheap and 6000 yards of thread on one spool!!

Old quilt top

My friend brought me this old quilt top. This top has been in her friends family for a long time. Marly wanted me to quilt it so she could give it to her friend all quilted and finished.

I love thinking of the history behind old quilt tops. This was all hand pieced and I only came across one hole. WOW

As I quilted and advanced the quilt I made sure to stabilize the top..bottom and sides as square as I could. So when I added my binding it was easy with no difficulty. This quilt top was pretty distorted...not bad for how old it is though!

I also came across extra fabric in the middle of the quilt I could not ease in. I made a tuck that ran along the seam...basted the extra fabric down then quilted it. I then took the baste stitch out and wala..it worked great!

The piece of fabric that was very thin was black and had a few holes. I took a small piece of black fabric and put it under the bad fabric. That way you didn't see the batting. It's not very noticeable at all.

I used Spiral Square on it and used a light gray for the backing. I had this little polka dot blue fabric I used for the binding and I think it was a great choice.

I'm sure I broke all sorts of rules handling the old top. But it looks better than it did and my friends friend will love it!! I think that's all that counts!

Betty did this BIG quilt up. 104 x 114. I used the pattern "Spiral Square" on it. One of my favorites! She wanted Wool Batting and for me to do the binding.

This panto comes with 2 rows and therefore the need to advance the quilt a lot! Well I was done with that...so one day I doubled it...I used the back of a panto I didn't like and traced the spiral square panto...so now I have 4 rows instead of 2 and it go's so much faster!! I like that!!

I do have a confession....I fell in love with Jessica's quilting and ever since I saw her swirl I have been trying to do my swirl to look like hers! Is that wrong? Jessica is an amazing Longarm quilter!! She doesn't have a blog..but she does have a Flickr page and she is absolutely amazing!

I'll often change up a panto. For this one "Meandering Daisy", I added a swirl where the leaf go's. This quilt was done up by Cinda...another shop sample for her shop "Calico Creations". It turned out sweet. It is not the fastest panto to do up though.

..sometimes I do the same quilting pattern a lot on a lot of quilts and right not it is this hook feather. This was a request and it turned out so pretty. This quilt is for Cinda at Calico Creations, a shop in Mt. Vernon and her piecing is always near to perfect!

start off with a big meander across the whole quilt

if your getting to far down on the spine...fit in a smaller petal...that will get you back up on the spine

if you have a hole...go ahead and take a petal way out to fill that in

remember to leave space for your feathers as you come around

to help your feathers interlock for the next row..I will a slight hole for a petal to fill in

when coming to a turn...follow the stem up and around then hook to the last petal

I will try to reverse the directions of my feathers for each quilting pass..gives it a more inconsistent look

Of course these are not my own ideas..and for the life of me I can't remember the name of the Quilter I learned how to do the big meander and fill in with the feather...I will post that when I remember? And Sally Terry is the first I know of who came up with the hook feather..but what I have come to find out over the last few years of doing this, is that even though we may all do the same thing...we all have a style of our own.

I'm sorry to admit this is a donation quilt I've had for a couple of years now! But it was a perfect one to try out an overall quilting design I've wanted to try ever since I saw what Kathy did to this one! It doesn't quite look the same as hers. Myne looks like little worm paths. Kathy's is beautiful. I have one more donation quilt to do and I'm going to try it again, but not be so squiggly and wormy looking...we'll see!

This is Luann's quilt. I did a freehand overall hook feather on it. She had some very pretty Asian fabrics in this quilt.

Applying binding while on the Longarm

I wanted to share how I apply binding to a quilt while still on the longarm. This is a tutorial on how I do it. There are other ways that I have tried, but this works best for me.

...beware..lot's of pictures!

prepare binding...

cut on the diagonal

iron a quarter inch fold

press in half...this is the first part of the binding that will be applied to the quilt

after I am finished quilting the quilt I start on the bottom-right of the quilt when applying the binding...start stitching the binding down about 6 inches in from the start of the binding...hoping the quilt is square, I set the channel lock...that helps get a good acurate 1/4 inch. (Luann did very well with her borders and her quilt was completely square!)

start stitching..

..try best to stay 1/4 inch from edge..or edge of foot

when coming to the corner..stop a 1/4 from the corner

don't stop and cut thread...just take your channel lock off move foot down off quilt and to the side

re-position your binding

fold binding down and up just as you would if you were doing this on your sewing machine

...see

now move the foot back to the end 1/4 inch from the left side of the quilt and start stitching

I don't have channel lock up and down...practice and precision and it will be good enough

bottom done heading up left side...

keep repositioning the binding

now when you advance your quilt..(heading back to the top) leave the needle in and then advance...you should never have to stop and snip your thread...unless you make a boo... boo...

you also shouldn't need to support your sides with clamps..

now you've made it to the top left...same as the other corner

set your channel lock for across the top

left..top done heading down right side

a little something I do when sewing the binding on the left and right sides is I put pressure on the base plate with my hand...that gives me more control of the machine and helps me stay 1/4 inch to the edge of the quilt

now I've made it around the last corner and coming to the beginning of the binding

cut off about and inch past the beginning of the binding

now tuck that end right inside the beginning end

stitch across that tuck to the beginning stitches and wa..la.. done..it take me about 10 minutes for lap size

now...before I go to the sewing machine to stitch down the binding...I iron it first...

from top of quilt...iron it over

from back of quilt iron it over

I stitch in the ditch on the top and catch the back...since I have ironed it, I don't need to pin the binding...I usually catch the back of the binding with no problem...(on this quilt I didn't miss one time)

wow...that was alot of pictures...hopefully that made sense! I do bindings for customers quite often and this is how I do it!

This is Shannon's quilt. I loaded both wall hanging on to one backing. It go's much quicker that way. I did a freehand swirl in the center's and a separate border design. I used a red/green/white variegated thread...which was perfect for these quilts!

This was also Shannon's. I used the pattern Autumn Oaks and a fun fall colored variegated thread!

Shannon's going to be read for the Holiday's this year!

These are Deb's quilts. The top quilt was custom quilting. I stitched down all the raw edge applique. So cute!

The middle quilt is for a baby boy. I did my freehand swirl on it and used a variegated thread. Love the trucks!

And the last quilt is a really cute quilt. I used the pattern called Patriot. In the pattern is a star and a wavy flag. Instead of the wavy flag I put in a swirl instead. I'll do this sometimes to my patterns, if I need to tailor it to the quilt better.
